The Atlantic Coast of the United States comprises the coastal states of Delaware, Florida, Maine, North Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Virginia, and Puerto Rico. The lands adjacent to the Atlantic coastline are made up of sandy beaches, marshlands, bays, and barrier islands.

As a whole, the vegetation of the outer beach is exceedingly sparse. Inner beach: Cordgrass (Spartina), spike grass, and water pennywort (Hydrocotyle) community (2).

Between the mean high-tide line and the grassy dunes or maritime forest on the sound side is a narrow strip of inner beach which is also largely barren (Pl. III). Whether you’re a vacationer or a local, when most people think of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, images of rolling sand dunes topped with swaying seagrass often come to mind.

While these picturesque dunescapes make for some of the best photography on the entire Eastern Seaboard, few who wander the winding pathways between the. Thanks to global warming and, ironically, those man-made dunes, geologists forewarn that our Outer Banks could one day be swallowed by the Atlantic.
